South African billionaire Dr Patrice Motsepe has successfully defended his presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), cruising to an uncontested re-election at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly on Wednesday 12 March, 2025 in Cairo, Egypt.
Motsepe, who had initially kept his cards close to his chest regarding a potential re-election bid, finally threw his hat into the ring in October 2024, following persistent urgings from CAF member association presidents and key football stakeholders.
As Africa’s ninth wealthiest individual, Motsepe was the sole contender for the top job, effectively sealing his second term as the helmsman of African football.
Since taking the reins as CAF’s first English-speaking president in 2021, Motsepe has masterminded a stunning financial turnaround for the continental football governing body.
Prior to his tenure, CAF was reeling from the termination of its lucrative $1 billion TV rights deal with Lagardere.
However, under Motsepe’s astute leadership, CAF has settled its past debts, hiked prize money for its competitions, and bolstered financial support for member associations.
The recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, which drew a record-breaking global audience of 2 billion viewers and about 180 countries watching was a major highlight of Motsepe’s tenure, with CAF reporting a staggering $72 million profit from the tournament.
By succeeding the disgraced Ahmad Ahmad, who was banned for corruption, Motsepe has worked tirelessly with FIFA to restore stability and credibility to African football.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed his commitment to boosting infrastructure development in Africa, following his re-election for a second term.
“Now, we have 12 nations who are not playing home games in their countries, previously, it was 38 nations, but we want to make sure, everyone can have a standard stadium and play their matches at home.”
This ambition is part of his broader vision to make African football competitive on the international stage.
The 63-year-old Motsepe is now set to lead CAF for another term of four years until 2029.
Meanwhile, Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Simon Okraku was also elected unopposed to the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) on the WAFU Zone B ticket.
