A pall of smoke still hangs over the Kantamanto Market in Accra, following a devastating fire that tore through the bustling marketplace in the early hours of Thursday, January 2, 2025.
The busy Kantamanto have now been replaced with scenes of heartbreak and chaos.
Traders, many of whom have poured their life savings into their businesses, now stand amidst the charred remains of their stalls, struggling to salvage anything of value.
The fire, fueled by flammable materials used in many stalls, spread rapidly, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Despite the valiant efforts of firefighters, much of the market was destroyed by the time the blaze was extinguished.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation, but the focus for the traders is now on rebuilding their lives and businesses.
Many are calling for government assistance, while others are turning to their communities for support.
