Zongo lane building collapses after several days of burning || Macqathylive

The building before it collapsed

The main story building that caught fire on Sunday morning at Zongo lane in Accra has now collapsed, exacerbating the devastation in the Makola Zogolane area.

On Tuesday, Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover, accompanied by security officials, visited the fire scene. Despite the efforts to control the situation, the building’s collapse has intensified concerns about the structural integrity of nearby properties.

According to reports, the fire, which started three days ago, affected several apartments and warehouses primarily owned by Chinese nationals. As of Tuesday, remnants of the blaze were still visible, with buckets of fire and smoke lingering at the scene.

During the visit, Glover and officials observed the fire service’s response, including the deployment of a turntable ladder. The National Acting Director of Operations, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade 2 Kofi Forson, assured that the situation has been brought under control.

In a statement, Minister Glover attributed the fire to the negligence of the traders in the area. He also announced that the government would not be offering compensation to the victims affected by the disaster. This decision has stirred mixed reactions from the community and the broader public.

As recovery efforts continue, the authorities are urging all stakeholders to cooperate in preventing such incidents in the future and to adhere to safety regulations.
