What Happened To Our African Values And Dignity?

Our society is gradually becoming horrifying than a horror movie, any time I watch TV, I ask myself what kind of generation are we going to have in few years to come?

We are  gradually descending into a state of anarchy. Now almost every useless thing has either become a human right or "fashion" .

Recently I was watching kids channel with my children, some of the words and scenes I saw in a cartoon show, I felt very sad, don't be deceived into thinking all cartoon shows are meant for kids, is best sometimes to either watch them with your kids or download it for them. There were kissing scenes and strong words like "F and N"  words on a cartoon show meant for kids.

Another channel I watched also showed a movie where kids were  the main actors, there were scenes in this movie that was like  an adult movie, yet these scripts and scenes were produced by so called talented writers and professionals.  Some of the so called  talented shows for kids have  children performing edited profane songs and twerking as well, all in the name of civilization, talents and children's right. Where is the censorship board?whose responsibility is it to check on what really goes on screens?

Africa is weak because of some of our highly educated people and leaders in our part of the world. A prisoner once said to me in an interview many years ago, "there are two things a prison does to a man, it either brings out the saint in him or the demon in him". It is same with education, too much of it, brings out either the "stupidity" in you or the decency in you.

Now there are names for every useless acts of indiscipline, when normal people decide to practice  abnormal acts that is to sleep with their same sex partners  is called human rights, when a young man, calls into a political talk show and decides to insult or abuse an elderly or someone verbally that person is considered a serial caller which is also considered a human right.

When a political leader decides to react to an insult or an abuse against him or her is considered autocratic and abuse of power. When a political leader or  a colleague of his or her party makes a mistake instead of this leader condemning  it, he/she support this person with every "argument"  because politics is about numbers. When a child tweaks, dresses  inappropriately for a talented show is called talent or fashion which is also considered a human right, forgetting that children enjoy privileges and not human rights.

When some men of God also decide to only become "prophets of doom" during 31st nights as well as indulging in  "indecent" behaviors at the auditorium of their churches, they are called powerful men of God.

I bleed as an African, where is our dignity? In my early days as a child, it was a privilege and a blessing to serve an elderly person. You will always start a conversation with "please"  and end with "thank you". You will always stand when an elderly comes to a place with limited seat . It was very strange for fetish priests to even identify themselves publicly. Now we have given them the licence to operate TV channels. "Racketearing" (419) was a criminal offense, now racketeers have been given the airtime to fraud people on national screens. Further it was very rare to even see chiefs, priests, pastors comment on political related activities or even take side in supporting a political institution.

Now is easy to find them declare support for any political party. Some Media practitioners have  failed to be the voice of the voiceless all because of partisan interest. Social media has become the world media for personal attacks for some people, especially on WhatsApp platforms and on Facebook live links.

The more insults, the more views, the more money. Indecent video clips have become some of the most expensive of  musical  clips, to the extent of even given these clips awards for best videos. Yet we still forget one day they will all come back in a different form. Because in life whatever thing you do be it good or bad will always come back in one  way or another.

Instead of educating, sharing of ideas and given authentic news items, we have turned social media into a platform of abuse, fake news and declaring people dead whiles they are alive. Because of more views and  money, some pretty ladies can even go naked all because they want to be known. Recently a lady went naked on a stage and died shortly after in *Kasoa*. Where are we going with all this ?

TV3 has taken the step with Ghana's Most Beautiful, we can also take further steps in bringing back our lost glory as Ghanaians and Africans. As a country we have beautiful local languages like Akan, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani and more, yet some of our International schools do not teach our languages as well as our societal norms and culture.

In a nutshell, let's our leaders lead, let's citizen be responsible, let's our students learn about our culture and let's learn always to unite as one to build than to destroy. Above all let's go back to our roots and worship God in truth.

Kindly listen to one of my favorite rap songs by Nas  titled " I can"  and you will understand that as Africans we  can rise if we want to . Let's work together. May God bless us all.
